Abstract

Scientists say stocks of Atlantic herring off the Northeast are at their highest levels in decades, prompting concern among Maine fishermen that a record number of Russian fish-processing ships will converge on the area this summer to harvest the resource. Resource Trading Co. and North Atlantic Inc., both of Portland, plan to have Russian herring boats here, and the federal government has allocated 77 million pounds of herring to Russian boats off Maine. The Russian ships have been coming to Maine waters every summer since 1987. Details.
