The Westbrook Police Department's two captains will each serve as chief for half of an eight-week search period while the city seeks a replacement for Ronald L. Allanach, who is retiring next Tuesday. Capt. Paul McCarthy, 46, will be acting chief for the first four weeks, after which Capt. John A. Schmidlin, 56, will take over for the next four weeks.
