Abstract

While 93,000 Mainers served in World War II, and more than 1,200 died during the conflict, Mainers on the home front produced boots, ships, and K-rations, and mined crystals for radios. One of the more significant aspects of Maine's involvement in producing goods for the war was the New England Shipbuilding Corp. in South Portland, where 35,000 men and women built 236 Liberty ships and 30 British cargo ships in just 3 1/2 years.
