Abstract

Former U.S. senator William D. Hathaway will accompany President Clinton and other top-level federal officials to Europe today for this week's celebrations commemorating the 50th anniversary of D-Day. Hathaway, 70, chairman of the Federal Maritime Commission, was a navigator in a B-24 bomber squadron based in southern Italy when Allied forces assaulted the beaches of Normandy. He parachuted from his plane on June 24, 1944, after it was hit by anti-aircraft fire during a bombing run over Romania, and spent two months in a prisoner-of-war camp. Details.
