Abstract

Thomas K. Edwards, 54, superintendent of Portland schools, yesterday announced that he will retire in August 1995 when his contract expires. Edwards' wife Ellen died in an automobile accident in January 1992, and Edwards says he has felt the need for a leave of absence to deal with his grief. During his tenure, Edwards has been praised for his fight for state funding and his vision for reforms, but drew criticism for his decision-making and communications skills. Details.
