Abstract

U.S. senator William S. Cohen sent a letter to around 25 people asking them to consider contributing money to Republican gubernatorial candidate Susan Collins, and some of the other Republican candidates feel the move was inappropriate. Cohen could not be reached for comment, but Robert Tyrer, his administrative assistant, said it was not an endorsement of Collins' candidacy. The other candidates believe that Cohen, as a senior U.S. senator and party leader, should not be involved in a contested primary election, but some were not surprised by Cohen's actions because Collins at one time worked for the senator.
