Abstract

Coast Guard officials said that the person who perpetrated the recent hoax regarding a gunfight between lobstermen off Orrs Island probably will not be caught unless he broadcasts again. Unfortunately, a federal investigation with erquipment that could have pinpointed the radio signal arrived 10 or 15 minutes after the broadcasts ceased. Hoax callers face six years in prison, fines up to $300,000, and a requirement to reimburse the Coast Guard for search costs. With excerpts from the false Mayday call.
