Abstract

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) will conduct an investigation of Portland West Neighborhood Planning Council's firing of Sheila Wellehan, who ran the organization's fair housing program. Wellehan claims that she was fired for having urged the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People to investigate a complaint of racist behavior by Portland West's housing manager. James V. Oliver, Portland West's executive director, said he fired Wellehan because she was a problem employee who behaved in a confrontational and insubordinate manner. Portland West has a $75,000 HUD grant to run its Fair Housing Initiative Program. Details.
