Abstract

Medical workers, volunteers, social workers and cancer patients will be on hand in Augusta today for the first Maine Cancer Pain Symposium, a conference sponsored by the Maine Hospice Council and Bingham Consortium for Health Research. The symposium, part of a state-wide cancer pain initiative and one of 36 in the nation, is aimed at changing the way cancer pain is managed in Maine. A survey by the Maine Cancer Pain Initiative shows that many Mainers with cancer are in pain because of the cost of pain medications, the regulations regarding its use and a feeling that there is value in suffering.
