Abstract
Business groups in Maine want the state Department of Environmental Protection to assume responsibility for enforcing federal wetlands laws in the state, saying that the current system results in a duplication of effort and produces excessive paper work. The federal Environmental Protection Agency and the Army Corps of Engineers currently regulate wetlands in Maine under the federal Clean Water Act, while the state regulates them under the Maine Natural Resources Protection Act.
