Abstract

The Maine Youth Center and the Androscoggin County Jail are the only facilities in the state approved to house arrested juvenile offenders, and when those places are filled nonviolent offenders are held in holding areas for as long as 72 hours. The Ramada Inn in Portland has been sanctioned by the state Department of Corrections as a holding area, and despite criticism from some law enforcement officials juveniles will continue to be held there when necessary.
