Abstract

The Diocese of Portland, which in 1965 had 261 priests, now has 147 priests for the state's 239,000 Catholics, and that number is expected to drop to 125 priests in four years. Church officials have studied the decline since the late 1980s, and have tried to recruit more men to the priesthood. The diocese, like many others around the nation, is giving to lay people the responsibilities that have long been the domain of the priest. Details; related articles.
