Abstract

Friday's announcement of the acquisition of Casco Northern Bank and the Bank of Vermont from the Bank of Boston Corp. by KeyCorp of Cleveland raises questions about layoffs and branch closings, regulatory issues and the future of Peoples Heritage Bank. There are 23 communities in the state with both Key and Casco branches, laying the foundation for a significant number of closings. If the acquisition is approved, Maine will have two affiliates of super-regional banks, Fleet Bank of Maine and Key Bank of Maine, one local independent bank, Peoples Heritage, and a number of community banks with assets well under $1 billion. Details.
