Abstract
Friends of Evergreen, the nonprofit group associated with Portland's Evergreen Cemetery, is trying to purchase the Stevens Homestead, one of just two homes left along the front of the 239-acre Victorian cemetery. Portland city manager Robert Ganley supported the efforts of the group to have Evergreen placed on the National Register of Historic Places, but balked at spending city funds on the 1767 home. Two professional Portland fundraisers have volunteered to run a campaign to raise $150,000 to restore the building. Details, related article on the Evergreen Cemetery Master Plan, to be considered by the Portland Planning Board tomorrow.
