Abstract

The Civil War battle flag of the 17th Maine Volunteer Infantry is in the possession of the Atlanta Historical Society, and Brian Sipe of the Maine State Museum is trying to retrieve it. No Maine flags were captured by the Confederates during the Civil War, and it is unclear how the 17th's ended up with the society. Seven Confederate unit flags captured by Maine regiments during the conflict were returned to their original states in 1927. Details.
