Abstract

An increasing number of Maine doctors with their own practices are joining group systems, which allows them to focus on doctoring while others worry about insurance, regulation and maintenance. Maine has nearly 1,000 primary-care physicians, with around one-third in family practice and one-quarter focusing on internal medicine. Observers say the number that are working alone is falling fast. Today's primary-care doctor is likely to be a salaried employee of a corporation, being paid a set fee by an insurance company for each patient he or she treats. Details.
