Abstract

Two recent domestic abuse cases in Cumberland County Superior Court are examples of the problems prosecutors face when prosecuting men accused of battering women. In both cases, the women who had been the victims of violence testified for the defense, changing the stories they had told police and blaming themselves for what had happened. One of the men, Donald O'Neill, 49, of Portland, was convicted of aggravated assault, while Richard M. Dearborn, 50, of South Portland, went free after the jury deadlocked. Details.
