Abstract

The Maine Alliance and the Maine Chamber of Commerce and Industry earlier this year issued a joint report suggesting that Maine work toward attracting retirees to the state, which could help businesses increase their total sales to older people. Since retirees as a group have more assets and more disposable income than younger segments of the population, they would be good for the economy. Some observers say the state should change its marketing strategy and tax codes to become more attractive to wealthy retirees; others feel the presence of large numbers of wealthy retired people might make the public forget the seniors who need help to get by.
