Abstract

Thirty-three individuals have applied for the position of chief of police in South Portland, fewer than have applied for recent police chief vacancies elsewhere in the state. At least two women are among the applicants, and 17 of them are from Maine. The application process in South Portland is largely controlled by the Civil Service Commission, and applicants are required to take a civil service exam, be interviewed by the commission and take a polygraph test.
