Abstract

Louisiana-Pacific, which is seeking to expand its Aroostook County plant with the help of pollution credits gained through the state's new automobile emissions test, last year was fined $11.1 million by the federal Environmental Protection Agency for falsely reporting air-pollution levels at 14 plants nationwide. The company was also fined $350,000 in 1992 by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection for other air-pollution violations. The federal Clean Air Act requires the state to cut nitrogen oxide emissions by 800 tons, while the auto emissions testing program is expected to reduce emissions by 2,000 tons. The state wants to apply the surplus reductions to companies seeking to expand or relocate. Details.
