Abstract

The organization Friends of Casco Bay will spend the next year studying the clam flats at Mackworth Island to determine if the clam population is strong enough to undergo a restoration project. The organization hopes to show that the expense of solving pollution problems can be offset by the economic benefits realized by reopening the flats, which have been closed for ten years. Currently, 49 percent of the clam flats in Casco Bay are closed to clammers due to pollution problems. Details, related article.
