Abstract

The Old Orchard Beach Town Council yesterday voted 3-2 against placing a referendum on casino gambling on the November ballot. Residents and two councilors challenged the other three councilors, saying they didn't trust the electorate to vote on the issue. Legalized gambling in Old Orchard has been hailed by some as the key to financial security for the town of 8,000, while others say it would drive out small businesses and lead to an increase in crime.
