Abstract

Pseudaletia unipuncta, a moth caterpillar, is responsible for the destruction of the Pownal hayfield of Judith and Chris Hyde. Known as the army worm because of the huge infestations, the insect eats corn, grain and grasses. The army worms in one week turned $1,800 worth of the Hydes' hay into worthless stalks. Clay Kirby, an entomologist with the state's agricultural extension office, said the huge infestations are not that uncommon in Maine, and usually occur in May and June. Details.
