Abstract

Catherine Morrill Day Nursery on Danforth Street in Portland is believed to be the state's oldest licensed day-care facility. Opened by the city's society women in 1919 to provide care for poor children while their parents worked, the nursery on Saturday celebrates its 75th anniversary. The Portland Baby Hygiene and Welfare Association in 1916 began instructing parents about sanitation, and in June 1919 opened the day nursery, which had 63 children enrolled within eight months.
