Abstract

The Portland Water District, Regional Waste Systems Inc. (RWS) and the city of South Portland in 1992 spent $250,000 to study ways to dispose of sewage-sludge, with composting one of the methods considered. The water district and South Portland generate around 35,000 tons of sludge annually, and spend $1.7 million a year on disposal. Plans for a sewage composting plant have now been dropped, as RWS has quit the study process and the water district and South Portland are negotiating contracts to truck their sludge outside the region.
