Abstract

Brief article about the difficulties being experienced by Berwick and other towns meeting the state requirement that they recycle 35 percent of their garbage. In January, the state plans to start penalizing those that fail by fining them $1.50 on each ton of solid waste needing disposal. The Cranberry Isles, recycling 67.6 percent of its waste, is current the leading recycler, followed by Monson and Wells, which, respectively, recycle 53.6 percent and 49.9 percent of their waste. Gives Maine Waste Management Agency ratings of southern Maine municipalities.
