Abstract

Angus King, an independent gubernatorial candidate has proposed that the state offer special credit cards, "Katahdin Cards", to the public in order to raise money for land preservation. The funds would be administered by the Land for Maine's Future Board. King suggested that perhaps $1 million a year could be raised by issuing the cards in conjunction with a bank that would pay the state a royalty on each transaction. Such cards are available in others states such as Iowa and Montanta. The Maine Legislature considered issuing a similar card in 1991 but allowed the bill to die.
