Abstract
Bath Iron Works is trying to ease into the commercial shipbuilding market by forging partnerships with leading commercial shipbuilders and shipping companies while adjusting to the leaner approach necessary for commercial success. BIW has working relationships with Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co. of Japan and the Kvaerner Masa-Yards in Finland, and two shipping companies want to place orders for car carriers if the yard can reduce costs and become competitive with foreign shipyards.
