Abstract

The 18,000-member Episcopal Diocese of Maine, through its Native American Project, has been lobbying on behalf of the Penobscot Indian tribe, and helped the tribe in their opposition to the proposed Basin Mills dam in Orono. Project members publicized the plight of the Penobscots in the diocesan newspaper, and wrote to top officials in Washington about their concerns. The lobbying is said to have had some impact on the U.S. Interior Department asking the U.S. Justice Department to file a legal brief supporting an appeal of the Basin Mills dam approval. Details.
