Abstract

The University of Maine at Orono extends accreditation and administrative support to the American University in Bulgaria, established in 1991 as the first American university in formerly communist eastern Europe. The U.S. Agency for International Development is supplying 70 percent of the school's budget this year, or $4.5 million. One Englishman, 11 Bulgarians and 35 Americans teach at the school. Details.
