Abstract

Bruce Mayberry of Windham on July 19 took a loaded semiautomatic weapon to the Deering Oaks Family Festival. Although there is no law prohibiting him from carrying a weapon, Portland police confiscated it and are refusing to return it. Police chief Michael Chitwood said the weapon would be returned if a background check on Mayberry turned up nothing unusual. An attorney with the Maine Civil Liberties Union says the confiscation of the weapon may constitute a violation of Mayberry's rights under the Second Amendment of the Constitution. Details.
