Abstract

The Maine Department of Human Services last August sent out notices of the state's new child support law to the 17,400 parents who were more than 90 days late in making support payments, warning them that they stood to lose their driver's licenses, business licenses and professional licenses if they failed to pay the amount owed. By June, the state had collected $12.9 million from 10,000 deadbeat parents, and more recently eight men who collectively owe $140,000 became the first to lose their licenses to drive. Details.
