Abstract

The Maine Department of Human Services and the state Department of Environmental Protection yesterday issued a joint advisory warning pregnant women, nursing mothers, women who may become pregnant and children under age eight not to eat fish caught in the state's lakes and ponds due to widespread mercury contamination. Other individuals should limit their consumption of fish from Maine waters to less than 22 meals annually. The advisory resulted from a study last summer that sampled a wide variety of fish from 150 lakes and ponds in the state. Details.
