Abstract

First in a four-part series on managing medicine. Doctors, hospitals, employers and insurance companies in Maine are transforming the state's medical system into one dominated by managed care, a comprehensive system that directs how people are treated and how providers are paid for their services. The state currently has three health management organizations, which combine provider and insurance functions into an aggressive form of managed care. Details, related article.
