Abstract

Builders of the new Portland-South Portland Bridge planned to drill holes for the 462 70-foot steel pilings that will support the two draws on the bridge, but the technique proved unsuitable and the pilings are being pounded into the Fore River. Driving each of the pilings to a depth of 45 feet takes around 30 minutes, and creates a booming sound that has been continuous every day until 5 P.M. The work on the draw on the Portland side will be complete in around two weeks, while work on the draw on the South Portland side won't begin until November. Details.
