Abstract

Miriam Remar, principal of Reiche School for nine years and a 24-year veteran of Portland's school department, has been chosen to oversee the city's 12 elementary schools. During her tenure at Reiche, the school won a designation from the U.S. Department of Education as a Blue Ribbon School, and was honored by the Maine Civil Liberties Union for AIDS education and tolerance-building activities. Reiche has 625 student, 81 percent from low-income families and 20 percent of them immigrants. Details.
