Abstract

The Maine Turnpike Authority wants to build two new interchanges in the Greater Portland area, one in Portland near outer Congress Street and the other just south of Exit 8 in Westbrook. The exits are scheduled to open in 1997, but before work can begin federal approval must be obtained to fill between 16 and 20 acres of wetlands. It is projected that the new exits will relieve local streets of an estimated 5,800 to 8,500 vehicles a day, or 30 to 50 percent of all traffic. Details, related article.
