Abstract

The USS Tirante, a submarine launched from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard on August 9, 1944, sank enough Japanese ships on its first patrol to win its captain a Medal of Honor and its crew a Presidential Unit Citation, the highest award a ship and its crew can receive. The surviving members of the crew this week returned to the shipyard to say thanks for building the submarine that got them safely through the war. Details.
