Abstract

A team of researchers led by Warren Reiss of the University of Maine at Orono's Darling oceanographic center yesterday began exploring the Penobscot River in search of a Revolutionary War naval fleet that was scuttled in 1779. The project, which includes crew members from the Maine Maritime Academy and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is funded through a one-year, $50,000 grant from the U.S. Naval Historical Center in Washington, D.C. Penobscot Expedition II is a non-intrusive examination that will not involve excavation. Details.
