Abstract

U.S. Senate Majority Leader George J. Mitchell on Tuesday will begin presiding over the Senate's debate of his compromise health plan, and though the battle will be fierce many observers say the Mitchell plan stands the best chance of any health care proposal. If successful, Mitchell could help President Clinton in his 1996 re-election bid, while failure could deal Clinton a major blow. Political insiders disagree on whether or not Mitchell's lame-duck status will affect the battle, but most agree it will be the fight of his Senate career. Details.
