Abstract

Yarmouth and Freeport are hiring a trash truck with a compactor that can haul a month's worth of empty milk jugs, allowing the towns to save thousands of dollars in hauling costs by cutting back on the number of half-empty recycling containers hauled. Plastics are especially inefficient to recycle, because a load of milk jugs is mostly air. Plastic milk jugs account for around 29 percent of the volume of recyclables received by Regional Waste Systems but only 2 1/1 percent of the weight. Details.
