Abstract

Former and Tennessee Governor Lamar Alexander yesterday stopped in Portland as part of a coast-to-coast trip designed to put the Republican Party back in touch with the country. Alexander, who was U.S. Secretary of Education in the Bush administration, began the trip July 4, and has covered 4,200 miles in 21 states since then. One of his aims in Portland was to publicize Gov. McKernan's Maine Youth Apprenticeship Program, which is part of a school-to-wok program that recently won the state a $2 million federal grant.
