Abstract
Forest Legacy, a conservation program of the U.S. Forest Service, has earmarked $1.8 million for the state to purchase development rights on at least one of three parcels in Maine being considered for protection. The sites being considered are the St. John River near Daaquam on the Maine-Quebec border; Pierce Pond and adjacent land in Bowtown Township; and Mattawamkeag Lake and part of the west branch of the Mattawamkeag River. State negotiators have begun discussing the proposals with landowners, and are to report back to the state Forest Legacy committee in July. Details.
