Abstract

A federal Northeast Fisheries Center report says that fish stocks on Georges Bank are so depleted that fish mortality should be reduced to as low a level as possible, which would require closing the area to commercial fishing boats. The New England Fishery Management Council yesterday discussed the report but took no action. Maine fishermen warned that if Georges Bank were to be closed large fishing vessels would probably come to the Gulf of Maine, threatening fish populations and ruining the fishermen who depend on it for their livelihood.
