Abstract

In the early 1960s, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built the jetties in Wells Harbor to prevent erosion of the town's beaches, but some officials say the jetties are hastening the erosion instead. The Corps said it will consider removing the jetties, but doing so would require the approval of Congress. John T. Smith, chief of the agency's coastal development branch, said the Army is studying the jetties and the extent to which they are responsible for the erosion. Details.
