Abstract
In the fall of 1992, the Portland Water District, the city of South Portland and Regional Waste Systems put together $250,000 to search for a solution to the problem of sewage sludge disposal -- Portland, South Portland and Westbrook combined generate a third of the sewage sludge produced in the state, and spend around $17 million annually in disposal costs -- Officials had hoped that a combined effort to discover a solution would decrease costs, but no viable plan has been proposed so far -- Details
