Abstract

Many schools in southern Maine will begin before Labor Day this year to avoid being in session when hot weather arrives in late June or early July. In recent years severe winters have resulted in classes being canceled, resulting in schools being kept in session into late June when hot weather makes it difficult for students to concentrate. The late finish denies students an early jump at summer jobs and makes it difficult for teachers to pursue summer graduate courses. Lists back-to-school dates for many schools in southern Maine.
