Abstract

Brief article reporting that the National Marine Fisheries Service yesterday temporarily suspended fishing for the largest bluefin tuna, citing heavy catches of Atlantic bluefin in Maine and Massachusetts. The NMFS estimates that the catch so far is 466 metric tons, while the quota from June through the end of the year is 531 metric tons. When landings are steady, as they have been this year, the NMFS orders a temporary closure so the fishery can reopen in September.
