Abstract

According to George W. Jahn, 78, the captain of the SS Jeremiah O'Brien, which is now on a visit to Portland, the O'Brien is in remarkably good condition despite her 51 year. This attests to the craftsmanship of her South Portland builders. Captain Jahn is well qualified to know. He served as mate aboard the Libert ship Manini, which was torpedoed from under him just ten days after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, and later as captain aboard the S.S. William Matson, another Liberty ship that took part in the D-Day landings at Normandy.
