Abstract

The National Environmental Law Center and the U.S. Public Interest Research Group yesterday said that Maine had 229 toxic chemical spills between 1988 and 1992, with one out of every seven spills leading to injury or evacuation. Ninety of the spills occurred at paper facilities, with International Paper Co. in Jay topping the list with 25 spills. Only nine states had fewer spills than Maine, but only one in 16 spills nationwide led to injury or evacuation. Details, specifics on toxic spills in Maine.
